The "Day Tripper" deserves special mention for being a bad idea for them (lack of "self awareness" as a band),and a stinky performance , and high level of "suckatude" . As you can see by the comments, there are those that defend the show, even think it is good . I guess I am in the middling to bad camp . Like all Dead shows, it has it's moments .

Lack of self awareness? Don't know about that:

Got a good reason
For takin the easy way out ...
She's a big teaser
She took me half the way there ...

Anyway, it was the last Day Tripper. In case you were counting. For comparison, here's the second to last Day Tripper ever, which was a lot of fun and the start of a hot show. Only two months earlier but a world away.

Btw I listened to the Boreal China Rider, and aaaAAAK! Slow DOOOOWN!!!! I swear Jerry is even out of breath at the end. There's also a China Rider on 6/25, and it's fast but they're not about to bang into a tree.

It was one of those "cool that they did it " sort of things . But if you were to play this in isolation to a Beatle fan, or even even someone attuned to this sort of music , you might get " who is this bar band with a crappy rhythm section , and inadequate singers, taking a stab a great Beatle song". But it is fun, and it IS a hot show (6/25)..
I just don't think covering tight pop songs, was playing to the Dead's strengths in the 80's , and 90s . One problem I have with their Beatle covers, is that they are not different enough to make it their own . Except I sorta like the late Garcia "Lucy In The Sky", and his "Revolution" is sort of in the "Deal" zone, right up their sleeves . But at least there Beatle covers were fun rarities . That they (Mr. Weir) played that embarrassing version of "The Last Time" so many times . Compared to the RS's menacing screeching, cars crashing, doom, their version seemed like a limp and lame tantrum . It could have worked , but it needed some rethinking ( "...so I guess you don't like their version Charlie ").
As to Boreal Ridge, besides Jerry being out of breath from the tempo ... the elevation might have been rough on some one not is the best of health...
I though of going to that one, but I am glad I didn't .
